Baptism and Thanksgiving Services

Baptisms (sometimes called ‘christenings’) are lovely occasions at which we welcome young children (or people of any age) as members of the Norbury church family. These take place on Sundays, either as part of our “9.30” or “11.00” services, or separately at 1.00 pm.

If you are interested in having your child baptised or if you are older and would like to be baptised please email our children’s worker, who will be able to offer more information.

As part of the preparation for baptism, we ask all parents to choose a date from our monthly Baptism Preparation session, which we hope you will find useful and enjoyable. Godparents are also welcome if they’d like to come, but we regret that for practical reasons it’s important that children are not brought along to this session. When your child is baptised he or she becomes a member of the church. We’re glad to baptise any child who lives in Hazel Grove, or whose parents worship regularly with us. It’s important that the child has a chance to grow up in the church where he or she has been baptised.

Thanksgiving Service

If you do not feel able to make the commitments required for Baptism you may find a Thanksgiving service to be right for your child and family. This is a joyful celebration with family and friends to say “Thank you” to God and to “name” your child publicly.

The service involves:

  • Lighting a candle and making a public commitment to care for your child

  • Welcoming “Godparents” similar to a Baptism

  • Signing your child with the sign of the cross

  • Support and prayers of the church

  • A certificate to mark the occasion
